Two men, each running from his past, bond over cinema and loneliness in Wim Wenders’ meditative, mesmerizingly beautiful road movie, winner of the International Critics’ Prize at Cannes.

In Kings of the Road, a roving film projector repairman named Bruno, aka “King of the Road” (Rüdiger Vogler), saves the life of a depressed psychologist named Robert, aka “Kamikaze” (Hanns Zischler), who has driven his Volkswagen into a river.  The two men somehow end up on the road together, traveling from one run-down rural German movie theater to another in Bruno’s repair truck, servicing film projectors and meeting a colorful assortment of oddball characters.  Along  the way, the two men fight, bond and celebrate life’s absurdities.  Captured in stunning black-and-white ‘Scope cinematography  by frequent Wenders collaborator Robbie Müller (a look inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Walker Evans), and dedicated to legendary filmmaker Fritz Lang, Kings of the  Road is a love letter to cinema, a moving and funny tale of male friendship, and an melancholy portrait of a country still haunted by war. (Dir. by Wim Wenders, 1976, West Germany, in German and English with English subtitles, 176 mins., Not Rated)
