Young Artists Concert: Ryan Grieser, viola and Jessica Zhang, piano

Two of the Valley’s most accomplished young musicians appear in recital, with music from Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Haydn, Liebermann, and Walton.

Ryan Grieser, 17, is a student at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix and studies viola with Ms. Susanne Rothaar. In 2014, Ryan performed twice in Carnegie Hall as a prizewinner in the American Protégé International Piano & Strings Competition as well as their Concerto Competition. He has also won prizes in solo competitions from the American String Teachers Association, Music Teachers National Association, Arizona Music Educators Association, Phoenix Symphony Guild, Phoenix Youth Symphony, Virtuoso Violas, and Four Seasons Orchestra. Ryan has served as principal viola of the All-National Honors Orchestra, Arizona High School All-State Orchestra, and Youth Symphony of the Southwest.

Jessica Zhang, 14, is a freshman at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe. She has been studying piano with Mrs. Hong Zhu since age 5. Jessica has participated in piano concerts and has won multiple prizes in competitions over the past few years, including first place in the 2016 Steinway Avanti Future Stars Piano Competition, first prize in the Phoenix Youth Symphony Young Musicians Competition, third place in the 2015 Arizona MusicFest Piano Competition, second place in the 2015 Arizona Young Artist Piano Competition, and first place in the East Valley Music Teachers Association Piano Competition in the years 2013 and 2015.
