Billed by Warner Brothers as “The Show of a Thousand Wonders!,” the smash hit Gold Diggers of 1933 is one of the most iconic showbiz musicals of the 1930s, fueled by that unforgettable Busby Berkeley magic!

Still in the throes of the Great Depression when it was released in theatres in May, 1933, Americans turned out in droves to be entertained by Gold Diggers’ catchy songs, opulent sets and biting social commentary (not to mention it’s naughty pre-Code sauciness). The film, directed by Mervyn Leroy (Gypsy), and featuring stunning costumes by Oscar-winning designer Orry-Kelly, features Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell, Aline MacMahon and Ginger Rogers as a quartet of “gold digger” chorus girls whose fortunes are variously made or otherwise altered in pursuit of their big dreams of Broadway stardom. Berkeley-regular Dick Powell co-stars as a gifted singer-songwriter with big plans of his own for launching a new “can’t miss” play, and maybe even falling in love!   The familiar backstage plot is elevated by Berkeley’s truly spectacular choreographed set pieces such as We’re in the Money, featuring a gaggle of chorus girls decked out in little more than strategically-placed gold coins,  the famous Waltz of the Shadows number (yes, the one with dozens of neon-lit violins), and the surreally erotic Pettin’ in the Park, which finds chorus girls clad in metal bathing suits being wooed by men wielding large can openers!  (Dir. by Mervyn Leroy, 1933, USA, 97 mins., Not Rated)
