See the new Werner Herzog thriller Salt and Fire before its national theatrical release at this special New York Film Critics Series preview screening, featuring a captured-live post-film discussion with Oscar-nominated star Michael Shannon, moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers! The New York Film Critics Series, broadcast to 50 selected major markets, takes place exclusively in cinemas and is never available on TV or online.

In this gripping and hallucinatory new thriller from celebrated filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), two ecologists (played by Gael Garcia Bernal and Veronica Ferres) are sent to South America as part of a U.N. investigation into an ecological disaster. Upon their arrival in Bolivia, the duo is kidnapped by the mysterious and villainous CEO (Michael Shannon) of the giant corporation held responsible for the incident. But when a nearby super-volcano begins to shows signs of erupting, they must all band together to try and survive the impending catastrophe. Featuring spectacular scenery courtesy of cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger (who also collaborated with Herzog on the stunning nature documentary, Encounters at the End of the World), and Herzog’s patented blend of offbeat surrealism, unpredictable plot twists and keen interest in the conflict between humans and nature, Salt and Fire is a unique journey into the heart of darkness. (Dir. by Werner Herzog, 2016, France/ Bolivia/ USA/ Germany/ Mexico, in English/ German/ Quechua/ Spanish with English subtitles, 98 mins., Not Rated)
