Speedy was the last silent feature to star Harold Lloyd—and one of his very best. The slapstick comedy legend reprises his “Glasses Character,” this time as a good-natured but scatterbrained New Yorker who just can’t keep a job.

A chronically unemployed Yankees fan, Harold “Speedy” Swift (Lloyd) dates Jane Dillon (Ann Christy), a young woman whose crusty grandfather, Pop (Bert Woodruff), runs a failing horse-drawn streetcar business in a rapidly changing city where the railway is becoming king.  Speedy finally finds his true calling when he becomes determined to help save Pop’s (and New York’s) last horse-powered trolley.   When a crooked railroad official steals Pop’s one remaining car, hoping to force him to shut down his business, Speedy must race against the clock to find the culprits, return the car in time, and keep the service running on schedule. From its joyous visit to Coney Island (filled with crazed, clearly unsafe contraptions masquerading as amusement park rides) to its incredible Babe Ruth cameo to its hair-raising climactic stunts on the city’s streets, Speedy is an out-of-control love letter to New York that will have you grinning from ear to ear. (Dir. by Ted Wilde, 1928, USA, 85 mins., Not Rated)
